Chapter 78: A Night Visit
by PotatoWalking through the dimly lit hall, the two of them arrived at a large room on the second floor. Outside the room, stood a man with brown hair. Upon seeing the young man, the man immediately bowed to him just like the previous one had done.
The young man waved his hand and said, “We need to go in.”
The man opened the door and gestured for them to enter. The young man stepped inside first, and when Ailin followed, she couldn’t help but cover her mouth in shock when she saw the man sitting in the center of the room.
“Why are you doing this?” After recovering from the shock, Ailin looked at the young man angrily.
“I’m just helping you two get together, that’s all,” the young man replied nonchalantly.
Ailin trembled, “I don’t understand what you’re saying.”
“Is that so?” The young man smirked, walked to the man tied to a chair in the middle of the room, and ripped the towel from his mouth.
“Lei, what do you want to do?” The man immediately shouted as soon as the towel was removed.
“Compared to Adams’ arrogance, you are far smarter. Mr. Murphy,” the young man sat down in a chair across from the man and gazed at him coldly.
“Are you working for Adams?” Murphy’s face turned pale.
“Hmph, do you think someone like Adams could afford me?” the young man sneered.
“Then why have you brought me here? Are you trying to blackmail me?” Murphy slightly relaxed upon hearing his response.
“Do you want to keep acting, Mr. Murphy? Since I brought Ailin here, don’t you understand what’s happening?”
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
“No surprise you’re such good partners, even your denials sound exactly the same. Originally, this plan was quite good, but you made a few mistakes you shouldn’t have. First of all, according to normal legal procedures, Montreux was very likely to leave the inheritance to his only daughter, Amy. So, if Amy accidentally died, the inheritance would naturally pass to his direct descendants, meaning the three of you brothers. But actually, you already knew the contents of the will, and you knew that if Amy had an accident, you’d get nothing. So, you didn’t really want to kill her, just made it look that way. Therefore, you had someone target Amy and Ailin, your real goal was to give Adams the wrong impression, making him think you didn’t know the contents of the will. This way, he would lower his guard around you.”
“Your influence is no match for Adams, so this makes sense.”
“Unfortunately, when I saved Amy in Nepal, you learned something from Ailin. You realized I might interfere with your plans, so you arranged for a hitman to kill me while targeting them.”
“By the way, your sniper was quite good. I nearly died. But here’s the question: why didn’t this excellent sniper cause any harm to Amy and Ailin, two ordinary people?”
“Also, just before the sniper took action, I happened to be outside Ailin’s room. I heard Ailin’s phone ring. Not long after she picked up the phone, the gunshots rang out. Don’t you think that’s too much of a coincidence?”
“If I’m right, that phone call was actually a signal you gave her. Am I correct, Mr. Murphy?”
“These baseless accusations you’re making up, how could you think of such things? Do you really believe I’m behind it?” Murphy scoffed.
“Of course not. You probably don’t know, but Amy, even though she has autism, is extremely sensitive to the emotional changes of those around her. She can sense whether someone has malice or goodwill, no matter how well they disguise it. You might think this is nonsense, but I believe in her ability. You are the second person, after Adams, who Amy strongly resists.”
Murphy laughed out loud, “You seriously think you’ve got me just based on these unconvincing things? How ridiculous.”
The young man quietly waited for him to stop laughing, then suddenly clapped his hands. At that moment, a young man in a black bodysuit dragged a man into the room.
When Murphy saw the face of the man being dragged in, unconscious, his face immediately changed.
“Do you remember him? He’s the sniper you hired. It took me quite some effort to find him,” the young man said to Murphy.
“What proof do you have that he was hired by me?” Murphy looked at the young man calmly.
“I don’t have proof, because hitmen always get their jobs through intermediaries. They never know who hired them. I didn’t bring him here to prove anything, I just wanted to vent my anger,” the young man said, stepping on the hitman.
“So, you have no evidence at all?” Murphy sneered.
“I’ve heard the word ‘evidence’ too many times tonight. People like me don’t need evidence because I’m not the police. If I wanted, I could kill you without batting an eye. But to satisfy your curiosity, I’ll give you what you want.” With that, he took out a small tape recorder and pressed play.
“Is there really no other way?”
“Ailin, calm down. Adams’ influence is too big, I’m absolutely unable to save that child. And besides, don’t forget, he’s not your child.”
“But Bruno is only five years old! Shouldn’t we call the police? I can’t just watch him die.”
“Calling the police is useless. With Adams’ character, he’ll kill him immediately. Darling, don’t overthink it. Once this is over, if you want, we can have our own child. Alright?”
“But…”
The young man turned off the recorder and looked at Ailin, whose face was pale and tears were flowing.
“You really disappoint me. After I started suspecting you, I planted a listening device on you. At first, I hoped I was just being paranoid, but unfortunately, I heard the worst outcome.” The young man sighed lightly.
Ailin couldn’t hold back anymore and collapsed to the floor, crying.
The young man turned back to look at Murphy, who was now nervously losing his composure, “You’re really smart and patient. You knew Adams would eventually target Montreux, so five years ago, you placed Ailin, an unimaginable pawn, by his side. Everything about her, from being an abandoned unwed mother to a dropout student, was part of your plan. You’ve been very successful. Ailin gained Montreux’s trust and now she’s Amy’ guardian.”
“Who are you really?” Murphy looked at the young man with bloodshot eyes.
